Spiritus- Detail

Spiritus is the Latin word for breath and is also closely associated with the intangible life giving force, soul or spirit. It's the divine spark that animates the matter that we are physically comprised of into a living, breathing being.

This figure is, quite literally, an image of inspiration. It's a play on the dual definition of the word inspiration which simultaneously means to be deeply moved inwardly resulting in some outward action or creation, and also the act of drawing air in deeply to the lungs. It wasn't until later that I noticed how nicely this image "dovetailed" with the passage from the Book of Genesis (2:7) which says "then the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being."
